The big picture

Hi all,

I had a good friend on phone last week. He has a successful post production company and he wanted to create a small web tool that will allow them to send clips to their clients.

Sound easy? It is. But…

I immediately spot something missing. I’ve asked him how they manage their projects. The obvious answer came. Excel… Ok I said, you need to change the way you think.

I’ve started to explain to him why he needs a database application that will run their company. I’ve started with the example of the clips that they wanted to send to the client. Let’s say you have an application with all the jobs you have. And under specific job sheet you can insert relevant information about the job. And when the clip is ready you can upload it to the client, from the job sheet.

Sounds complicated I know but it is quite simple. Just imagine that for each job you have a specific page where you can insert all the relevant information. Then I continue you can add costs and other financial info and in the end you can have reports that can give you an accurate picture of your business.

This was too much theory and I needed to show him examples.

The next week he came back with 20 pages document and forms and asked me to integrate everything into one web application. You can call it Intranet, Business database, business software you name it. The point is that every business needs one. So why not to put it on the web?
